The Three Domain Secure

3-D Secure

The Three Domain Secure (3-D Secure) protocol enables issuers and acquirers to securely authenticate the cardholder prior to completing an e-commerce order on the merchant's website

What is 3D Secure?

3-D Secure is an XML-based protocol, designed by Visa, that adds an additional security layer for online credit card transactions. The service is offered to customers as Verified by Visa.

This protocol has also been adopted by Mastercard, JCB, American Express and Diners Club International with the services named SecureCode, J/Secure, SafeKey and ProtectBuy, respectively.

Three-domain model (3-D)

The basic concept of the protocol is to add additional security layer for the financial transaction authorization process with an online authentication

1
Acquirer Domain

The Bank (Merchant) who gets the money

2
Issuer Domain

The Bank which issued the card

3
Interoperability Domain

The infrastructure provided by the card scheme to support the 3D Secure protocol (i.e. Internet, MPI (Merchant Plug-in), ACS (Access Control Server) and other software providers)

End-to-End Authentication Solutions

A robust suite of authentication solutions for card issuers, payment processors, payment gateways and merchants

For Card Issuers

Access Control Server (ACS)

ACS facilitates issuers to perform 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) using one-time passwords (OTP) sent to the cardholder's mobile device or generated by a hardware token before authorization takes place. It is available as a hosted service or an on-premise solution that is integrated to the Issuer’s HSM and OTP system

  • Single platform for authentication
  • Proven real-time cardholder and credit card authentication solution
  • Single enrolment for Verified by Visa, Mastercard SecureCode, JCB J/Secure, American Express SafeKey and Diners Club International ProtectBuy
...

For Merchants & Payment Gateways

Merchant Plug-in (MPI)

MPI helps merchants activate the issuer's interface during authentication process. MPI identifies the account number and queries card issuer's Directory Servers to determine if it is enrolled in a 3-D Secure program, which then returns the website address of ACS if it is found

  • Simple Integration for Payment Gateways
  • Intuitive Web-Based Administration Interface
  • Multi-Platform Support
  • Easy Installation
  • Fraud and Chargeback Minimisation
